Part One: Why a northerner should not go to school at The University of Mississippi Right off the bat, consider the geography of the state of Mississippi and then the school itself. Looking at a map of the United States, Mississippi is way down there in the Deep South. The school is located in northern Mississippi. Northern Mississippi is a baron, unappealing place. Consider this: most states above the Mason Dixon Line have some sort of winter activities—snow, mountain resorts and such. Northern Mississippi becomes uncomfortably humid and hot from May through November; when winter comes—normally late in the year— it is bitterly cold and there is no retreat to enjoy the long awaited winter. Mississippi is also a relatively flat state. Whether you realize it or not, the Appalachian Mountains are extremely beautiful. Almost always, you can look off in the distance and see the blue-gray hazy mountains stretch as far as you can see in both directions. There is nothing worth seeing when you look off at the horizon in MS—big pine trees, an abandoned house, fields, just kill me. The northeast has mountains, beautiful forests, relatively easy access to beaches, and historic and fast cities. Mississippi has Memphis. Memphis is a depressingly poor city with a high crime rate. Memphis’s music scene, more specifically Beale Street, will occupy you for less than an afternoon. Memphis is also the airport you will fly in and out of when you return to the northeast. The Memphis airport is possibly the worst airport in the USA. It is gray, melancholy, and smells like stale urine. It is also 80 miles north of the school. This means you will always need a ride to and from the airport. You will scramble to convince a friend the make the drive or you will pay over $70 for a car service. Once you get to Mississippi, you should understand the history and reputation of the state and the school.
